Lake Forest, Illinois was host to what man consider the most important Polo game of the 20th century - the famed and fabled East - West clash of 1933.
The drama played right here in Lake Forest. The match was set up to answer the question, "Can the West really play polo?" The answer was an undisputable "yes" as the West, from such places as California and Texas, won two out of three intense battles. There were ten thousand seats added to the fields in order to accommodate the large crowd. Box seats sold for $5.50 and the general public was admitted for $1.10. The Chicago press covered the match in great detail, right down to the arrival of every player and horse, the color of the horseflesh and the color of the goalposts. The match in Lake Forest had been described as a "gleaming moment in American polo, if not the very zenith of the game in this country." ![]() Photo & Article Courtesy of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society. |
